DESCRIPTION OF SESSION: The speaker will present three infectious diseases cases caused by bacteria not frequently isolated in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Each case presentation will provide the patient history, laboratory testing procedures used in each case, and a review of the bacteria involved in each case. LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE Refresher course; some basic knowledge required PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: At the end of the session, the participant will be able to: 1. Explain the epidemiology and transmission of the bacteria discussed in these case presentations 2. Describe the risk factors for infection associated with the bacteria in case #3. 3. Discuss some basic differences between the bacteria in these cases and how these differences impact how they commonly look on Gram stain.
